Stress Management

Today, the term ‘Stress’ is often used to describe a pressurized state-of-mind and has become one of the most used words in conversations. Each body produces hormones called Cortisol (‘stress’ hormone) at times of danger to keep us alert and agile. However, a volatile secretion of this hormone in high amounts is harmful to the body.

A Patient in the grip of acute stress feels severely distressed resulting in anxiety disorders, melt-downs, dysfunctional relationships, impaired judgement, afflicted creativity, substance abuse and lack of productivity. Prolonged stress can even lead to organ failures, stroke, immune disorders, cancer or chronic depression.

Symptoms of Acute Stress include:
  • Sleeplessness
  • Indigestion
  • Pangs of anger
  • Teeth Grinding
  • Headaches
  • Gastritis
  • Poor concentration and restlessness
  • Depression or lack of motivation
  • Severe exhaustion or chronic fatigue

In terms of Ayurveda, Patients are unable to deal with Stress because of the lack of coordination between three primary mental functions: Dhi (acquisition & learning), Dhriti (retention) and Smriti (ability to recall) along with a shortage of Ojas (energy). This impacts in negative physical responses that incapacitates a person mentally or/and physically.

Main causes of acute stress are:
  • Poor lifestyle
  • Work pressures
  • Financial pressures
  • Lack of emotional support system
  • Performance pressures or anxiety
