Chikitsa or Treatment In Ayurveda

According to the basic principles of Ayurveda, a human body gets diseases when there is an imbalance in the Tridoshas of the body (constituting elements called Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). Unlike Allopathy, here every medicine and therapy is customized for the patient. An extensive use of natural elements (plants, metals, minerals, mud etc) is done for massage therapies, Rasayanas (medicinal concoctions) and tonics.

Different types of treatments are concurrently given to patients for an effectual healing process:
  • Reduction therapies to decrease the Excess or ailment, to purify the body and to establish a state of balance.
  • Toxicant therapies to take care of deficiencies in the body.
  • Rejuvenation therapies for restoring vitality and immunity of the body.
  • Herbal Medications to supplement healing.

Therapy combination of the treatment plan not only depends on the prescribed healing techniques but also on the experience and wisdom of the Vaids (Ayurvedic doctors). The best part of this science is that it doesn’t have any side effects on the patients.

As per the popular legend, long time ago an Ayurvedic physician called Vagbhata visited Kerala in search of some medicinal plants and herbs. He used to follow Ashtangahridayam methodology of treatment. Later, his eight prominent students (natives of Kerala) adopted it and imparted the same as Ashtvaidyas.

While Kerala Ayurveda adheres to the basic principles of ‘Regular’ Ayurveda, there are some changes (or advancements) in the treatment methodologies of a few specialities. These changes are even considered to be advancements over Samhitas compiled by Suśruta and Charaka, the principal contributors of Ayurveda.

Some ways in which Kerela Ayurvedic practices are different from ‘Rest-Of-India’ Ayurvedic practices are:
  • Sahasrayogam (a compendium of 1000 Ayurvedic medicines) is used as the reference textbook for treatments. Sahasrayogam contains formulations from various ancient Ayurvedic manuals like Suśruta Samhita, Charaka Samhita, Bhaishajya Ratnavali etc.
  • Kerala Ayurveda gives special emphasis to medicinal oil therapies used for Panchakarma treatment procedures and has developed certain variations like Thalapothichil and Ksheeradhoomam. Often the base oil used for these massage therapies is Coconut oil instead of Sesame oil.
  • Kerala Ayurveda is in the forefront of treatment done through Kashaya Chikitsa(medicinal concoctions).
  • They were the first to delve on the antioxidant properties of Abayangam leading to the profusion of Kizhis.
  • Some of the treatments that were introduced by Kerala Ayurveda are Navarakizhi, Elakizhi, Thalapothichal, Sirovasthi, and Dhara.
  • Some rare herbs in medicines are replaced with locally available herbs having similar properties.

Kerela’s favourable climate (for massage treatments), its high affinity & experience in using Ayurveda and availability of a wide variety of medicinal herbs, makes it the most preferred destination for Ayurvedic treatments.
